People still missing after mall roof collapse in Elliot Lake

6/24/2012

Authorities say a number of people appear to be missing after a portion of roof collapsed at a mall in the northern Ontario city of Elliot Lake.

Ontario Provincial Police aren't releasing a number, but say they have a list of potential missing people that's two pages long.
They say names continue to be crossed off that list as members of the community account for their loved ones.

Police also say 22 people were injured in the collapse, but none of them were seriously hurt.

A Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team from Toronto has been sent to Elliot Lake to help and confirms that at least one person was trapped in the collapse.

Part of the Algo Centre Mall's roof, which serves as a parking lot, crashed through two floors of the shopping centre just before 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The collapse exposed a tangle of twisted metal and concrete supports and triggered a gas leak which prompted emergency officials to cut power to the centre.
