Thorold Tunnel reopens after flooding

7/18/2012

The Thorold Tunnel reopened at 2:45 this afternoon after it was closed in both directions  because of a power failure that caused the pumps that keep water out of the tunnel to stop working.

Ministry of Transport Communications Co-ordinator Astrid Poei tells 610 CKTB news the power failed around 1 oclock and the OPP quickly moved to close the tunnel when it was determined the pumps weren't working.

She says about two feet of water had built up in the tunnel by 1:20 pm.

Poei adds at 1:50 pm power had been restored and their maintenance crews pumped out all the water on the roadway allowing OPP to reopen the tunnel.

We received this video from one of our listeners of the flooding.
