Steamy long weekend in Niagara

8/3/2012

Niagara's in for a steamy long weekend.

Environment Canada has issued smog & Humidex advisories for Niagara & much of southwestern Ontario.  An Excessive Heat Alert from the region's Public Health Department is also in place.

The mercury could hit 33 degrees on Saturday, but it'll feel much hotter when you factor in the humidity.  Sunday's expected to be rainy.  We should see a return to sunshine on Civic Holiday Monday.

Niagara's Public Health Department is asking you to be careful in the punishing heat by:

-planning outdoor activities in the morning or evening when the heat is less intense

-not leaving kids alone in the car; protecting them with hats, loose clothes & sunscreen

-using a cold shower to cool down, not a fan

-drinking lots of water

-being on the lookout for signs of heat sickness like headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, muscle swelling & heart issues.

The Excessive Heat Alert also means a number of pools, splash pads & community centres are extending their hours so you can cool off.
