Arrest in manhole cover thefts

8/22/2012

An arrest in the theft of manhole covers  in St. Catharines.

Since February, police have received a number of reports of the theft of the covers along with sewer grates mainly from the sides of roadways and in private parking lots which can cause a serious safety hazard to motorists and pedestrians.

Yesterday, police arrested Seppo Uusimaki of St. Catharines.

The suspect is accused of stealing approximately 20 manhole cover and sewer grates throughout the city.

Why steal a manhole cover?

Despite the fact they weigh about 50 kilograms,  the rising price of base metals has made it a lucrative item for thieves to steal.
