Student Rental Scam Warning

8/28/2012

Police are warning landlords to watch out for what they call the student rental scam.

Cops say with students returning to Niagara and Brock, fraudsters are lying in wait ready to defraud unsuspecting landlords.

The scam goes like this, a suspect calls a landlord who has advertised an apartment for rent.

Posing as a student, the suspect sends a cheque paying for the rental unit for a full year.

A few weeks later the suspects claims he is going to another school and asks for the money back usually by money transfer to an out of town or overseas location.

The NRP says the scam will continue into the school year targeting landlords who are having trouble renting their apartments.
