BREAKING-It's official, Kathleen Wynne enters the Ontario Liberal Leadership race

11/2/2012

Premier Dalton McGuinty is confirming that longtime cabinet minister Kathleen Wynne is seeking to replace him as leader of the Ontario Liberals.

He says she told him that she's seeking the leadership and says she'll be a very strong candidate.

Earlier today, Wynne announced her resignation as minister of municipal affairs and aboriginal affairs _ a prerequisite to running for the leadership.

She promised to make an announcement on Monday, but didn't provide any further details.

McGuinty made the surprise announcement two weeks ago that he was stepping down after 16 years as Liberal leader and nine as premier, but would stay on until the next leader is chosen.

But he told his ministers that if they wanted to seek the leadership, they'd have to resign from cabinet first.
