I predicted at the beginning of the baseball playoffs that even though I don’t really like the Yankees, I had a feeling they were gonna make some noise and quite possibly win it all. Back in the Bronx after splitting the first two games in Baltimore, New York pulled one out of the fire in classic walk off fashion. Raul Ibanez, pinch hitting for A-Rod not only tied the game up at 2 with a home run in the bottom of the ninth, but then delivered a monster game winning shot in the bottom of the 12th to give the pinstripes a 2-1 series lead.
It was quite incredible really. But what was more incredible is that Joe Girardi essentially benched Alex Rodriguez. He keep freezing as the Orioles were blasting fastballs low and was 0 for 3 on the night. So Girardi pulled the pin on his high priced slugger and it paid off. Twice. The Yanks also won it without their number one closer Mariano Rivera who blew out his knee in May. But this is why the Yanks are the Yanks. Big guys go down or are ineffective and they simply give a nod to the guy next in line. They spent a lot of money on insurance. It’s a luxury few teams have. Which is why the rest of the baseball world calls them the damn Yankees.
