Bullied Bus Monitor Brings Big Bucks

Ask Karen Klein if she thinks she'll get the $600,000 (and counting) pledged to her and she's skeptical. Previous to being a bus monitor at a salary of $15K/year she was a bus driver in the Rochester, N.Y. suburb of Greece.

Last week as she sat in the back of the school bus doing her job, a group of students, thought to be of middle school age, bullied, insulted and mercilessly taunted her to tears for over 10 minutes. The captured video was posted on YouTube (available below) and went viral.

BULLY FOR HER

A Toronto man began a campaign to raise $5000 for her for a vacation, just so she could get away and perhaps restore her faith in mankind. Pledges so far are over 10 times that amount.

As for the students, they have apologized in various forms and so have their parents, which is (at least) the right thing to do. We can only hope that valuable lessons can be learned.

What is frighteningly mysterious is that some of the students have received over 1000 death threats since the incident which really exposes the menacing “eye-for-an-eye” mentality. I mean if you are against bullying, how do you plan to solve it by threatening a 12 year old with his life? Perhaps we have been too endoctrinated by the movies where the bully really gets his in the end, and we cheer.

I am not against punishment but I hope at some point the crazies who utter death threats realize that this only makes matters worse. If Karen does get the money my recommendation would be to set up some sort of foundation. She could pay herself a reasonable salary as head, and use the money to make anti-bullying videos (starting with her own), print pamphlets, travel and talk to youth, hold town hall meetings, arrange a screening of the Bully movie and things of that nature.

Perhaps at age 68 she has been given an opportunity to not only serve her community, but to really make a difference. LEAVE COMMENTS.

Joe, I don't think her job is discipline. She's just a bus monitor, make sure everyone gets on and off, head counts, damage to property and others. Bullying of the bus monitor was probably not in the job description. Just sayin'

maybe, but her job would also include stopping any "horseplay" and rowdy behavior as well. as far as I remember that's what they did when I rode on a school bus.

at any rate i dont agree with people giving her money because she couldn't stand up to some 10 year olds.. can I have some money for breathing in air? thanks lol

Joeb, you sound like a bully yourself. She didn't start the campaign, a gentlemen in Toronto did. Is there something wrong with a kind man to do something good for a total stranger? You sound very bitter, jealous maybe?

Fired for not sticking up to those little brat bullies for harassing her? how does that make sense? You have no idea on how she would have reacted if these spoiled bullies were harassing other kids.

I say good to that kind man who is doing something good, we need more positive people like him then we do negative like bullies, and maybe yourself.

Have to agree with JoG. And I think her being a senior has more to do with it than her being a woman. I think that an elderly gentleman would have received the same consideration and kindness from the public.

It's about respect. I can only imagine the fallout if Karen had stood up to these kids. And to be honest, what could she have possibly said that they would listen to? It would only have served to fuel their cruelty. Have you ever been teased or bullied, Joeb? I have, relentlessly, and the only recourse is to laugh hysterically (a la Dr. Joy Brown).

Karen never asked to be given that money. I agree that she should start a foundation. I don't see it happening but it would be a wonderful thing to do.

I hope that this lady gets a financial adviser so that she can retire and be secure for the remainder of her life. How anyone views this as a handout is beyond me, she didn't ask for money from anyone, it was a fund set up by a total stranger for her. There is a little thing in life called generosity and I wish more people would partake of it on a daily basis and partake a lot less in envy. The world would be a less cruel place.

    Thank you Andrea. Great comments.

    Also TaraF -great, thanks.

It is about respect and generosity and it seems so people would rather bully her in to not taking the money.
