A Coma In Croatia

Former Toronto Argonaut cheerleader Anna Leibenko planned her European summer vacation with her 3 friends. It would be a month to remember.

Anna celebrated her 24th birthday in Florence at the end of July, then toured Greece, then made her way to Yacht Week in Croatia. People rent yachts, explore the caves, lagoons and islands of the Adriatic, swim, party, socialize. Sounds great doesn't it?

VACATION NIGHTMARE

Last Friday about 6 a.m. Anna and her friends decided to take the 10 foot dive off the boat into the warm sea waters. Anna slipped on some steps, hit her head and was unconscious when she hit the water. Friends immediately knew something was wrong and went to her assistance. Another went to get a doctor from Brazil who was 10 boats over.

A medical helicopter took her to hospital in Split, Croatia where she is in an induced coma, on life support, with various brain and lung contusions, and fractured facial bones. Her mother flew to be by her side. There are small signs of her progress but she must be kept there at least a few more days until she is stable enough to be flown back to Toronto, a medical flight reportedly costing $93,000. There are also the mounting Croatian medical bills.

Of course she had no travel medical insurance. I say of course, because this is partly why her story is being shared. Family and friends have set up this website and have raised about $40K so far. I also say of course, because most young people decline the insurance when traveling. You're young, healthy, bullet-proof, what could possibly happen? Two of her friends had insurance. Anna did not.

Believe me, I'm not here to sell you insurance, or to tell you to help this family, but if there ever was a statement as to the frailty of life, this is it. Some have already said, that if she wasn't an attractive 24 yr. old woman, she wouldn't even be getting this much attention. Perhaps.

Whether you help or not is of course up to you. All I say is that any time you step outside this province, think..."What if something happened? What is my back up plan?" LEAVE COMMENTS.

Out of Country insurance is something that a lot of people take for granted. I spent many years traveling through the United States and around the world working in the SCUBA business. I not only had travel health insurance but I also carried insurance in case I required Hyberbaric Traetment for a SCUBA related accident.
When my wife and I were planning our first family vacation to Florida two years ago she asked if we really needed health insurance? I explained that the couple hundred dollars spent here before we left was a lot cheaper than the thousands we could encounter south of the border if one of us required any medical treatment. She rolled her eyes when I returned with insurance that covered the two us and her two children for 1 year instead of just our week long trip. The cost was less than $100 for all four of us to upgrade to a yearly plan.
One thing she did not take into account was we live in Niagara and like most residents we pop over the river to shop periodically. A lot of people forget when they cross the border they are entering a different country. So we have piece of mind year round for under $300.
A few years ago my nephews and I went skiing in western NY. My nephews the hotshots that they are were showing off and one of them hit a wooden pole head on. One ambulance ride to ECMC in Buffalo and a bunch of expensive tests later we were on our way home with a pair of crutches. The Ambulance ride was free but the hospital bills were over $10,000 US. Luckily my sister is as prepared as I am and she had year round coverage for her whole family.

It's unfortunate that this woman and her family are having to go through this. Coverage probably would have been under $100 for her trip.

Wow tekdvr...thank you SO much for the tip about the year-round coverage. I too will be vacationing with the family in the USA in a few weeks and certainly plan to get coverage. But I didn't realize how inexpnsive it is to get coverage year-round. Excellent point about the mini-trip over the river throughout the year...I'm sure accidents can happen even at Wegmans! Great post!
