69 - 23 = 46

Rod Zimmer is a Canadian senator from Manitoba. He's 69. His wife of one year is 23 year old Maygan Sensenberger, an aspiring actress with an affinity for Marilyn Monroe and has never won an award for her creative spelling of Maygan. Their age difference is 46 years.

The happy couple made the news this weekend when last Thursday (Aug. 23/12) on an Air Canada flight to Saskatoon they got into a “domestic dispute.” Maygan allegedly became loud and abusive and at one point may have threatened to take down the plane.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE?

The crew radioed ahead and Maygan was met by police as the plane touched down safely in the prairie community at around 8 pm. Some reports have Maygan abusive to other passengers and there is a thought alcohol may have been involved. Sadly, the trip to Saskatoon was for the internment of his mother's ashes who had died last year. This was also to be the first time Zimmer's family would meet his new bride.

Sensenberger made a tearful court appearance the next day and will be facing a judge again this week. As we all know, especially since 9/11, threats on aircraft of any kind are treated with extreme seriousness and immediate action. Maygan should have realized that, mind you at the time, she was 12.

Zimmer got his Senate seat from Paul Martin in 2005 and ironically, one of the committees he sits on deals with transportation. Prior to his cushy appointment he was a well known Winnipeg businessman and philanthropist.

All my life I have heard something called “the French rule”. The youngest a man should date or marry is half his age + 7. I don't know if it applies women to men. That would mean Zimmer should have married someone at least 41. And what's worse, galavanting with a young 20-something or marrying her? I guess one could say that at least they both made a commitment.

Perhaps we're making too much of this? All couples argue, even in their first year of wedded bliss. According to a cousin of the senator, the public is in a “rush to judgment” over what she may or may not have done, PLUS, he's a damn good senator they say. Perhaps. But this is one decision he made which I'm already questioning. How many others are there?

The thing about love, lust, sex or whatever this is, is that it makes people believe massive age differences in relationships can work. They never do. In the famous movie Moonstruck, Rose asks Johnny “why men chase women” and Johnnny says...”Cause they fear death.” Rod Zimmer it would seem is very afraid. LEAVE COMMENTS.

TrudyW - A long time ago I promised myself that however odd a relationship might seem to me, I can't be aware of what goes on between two people. Having said that...this is creepy, totally agree.

Perhaps we should add a caveat or restriction to the 1/2 your age plus 7 rule. "Age differential not to exceed 25 years."

That would mean that a 66 year old shouldn't marry a 40 year old. And what in the world would they talk about anyway. An age difference of more than one generation must contribute to an awkward relationship. A 23 year old should be socializing with other twenty-somethings.

Doug2...I agree, but you know at least if the younger person is upper 30's or 40's...they had a chance to do some things, live, etc., and would make a different decision about marrying an older person than say...a 22 year old. (Btw...kids shouldn't smoke pipes either. Lol. Just kidding, I love the pic.)

Creepy yes, but as long as they are 2 consenting adults who aren't breaking any laws, eg: Citizenship marriage, than whatever. It doesn't directly affect my life, even if I think they look rather silly being together. Having said that, this incident on Air Canada should be treated just as harsh as any other person who would have been yelling they were going to take down the plane if indeed she did just that.

Good points Tara. Although at a 46 yr. age gap, one does wonder what they are both consenting to. And of course, yes, NO senatorial privileges if she broke air traffic law.

This story made me laugh. Im in a common law relationship, and a friend of mine is bothered by the fact that I call my partner my " wife". He cannot seem to get over the fact that the only difference between a marriage and a common law relationship, is just a piece of paper, and time wasted planning, expenses etc. I have nothing against other people getting married, just do not impose your values on me.
Hell, a woman would not have drowned if she chose not to trash her wedding dress, or marry for that matter.

Anyways, I get a kick out of stories like this, it supports my arguement that marriage has little value when you think about it.

PastaS. Its commitment surely pales beside genuine emotional involvement.

A credible witness said that the only statements out of this woman's mouth were in the context of help for her husband who has been suffereing some attacks from a medical condition of late and that he has been minimizing-no threats or any sort.
    so.....there ya go.
