THIS Is What I'm Talkin' About

Where was Old Spice 10 years ago? Where was it 20 years ago? For many men Old Spice was a memory, the gift Grandma got you not because you were necessarily old enough to shave, but just old enough (she felt) to begin to smell like Grandpa.

Old Spice was many a Christmas gift, many a stocking stuffer, but definitely something from your past.

THEN WHAT HAPPENED

It's a great success in marketing story. In 2006 Old Spice introduced a new fragrance that went on to win an FHM magazine Grooming Award. In 2008 the original was repackaged at Classic Scent with the great slogan, “If your grandfather hadn't worn it, you wouldn't exist.”

Shortly after that it all changed with Isaiah Mustafa and a series of “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” ads, with a great 2010 viral video where Mustafa was set in a bathroom and replied to on line questions for 3 days. The online component was brilliant.

Could they top it? Well this is actor and former football star Terry Crews, currently starring in the Expendables2 and as Jeff Daniels character's bodyguard in Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom on HBO.

He is not only wired for this latest viral ad, but at the end, you can play the intruments simply by using your regular QWERTY keyboard.  IT'S INTERACTIVE.  CRAZY FUN!  GOOD TIME WASTER...

Click here for a brief (complicated and mostly not helpful) explanation of how it was done.

Enjoy. It's creative smart advertising and marketing. That's what I'm talkin' about. LEAVE COMMENTS.
