She's Fast. I'm Furious.

This week a 29 year old Toronto woman was clocked doing 212 km/h on Hwy. 401 near Chatham, Ont. She apparently ignored 2 OPP cruisers set up to stop her and continued at high speeds until she was stopped in Elgin County.

The vehicle she was driving was impounded for seven days under Ontario's “street racing law” and her driver's licence was automatically suspended for a week. As you know when you are 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit this law goes into effect. She will also face speeding charges in the near future, along with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and racing.

MOTHER

Here's the most unbelievable part. In the car were her six year old daughter and three year old son. AND, they were not secured properly in their car seats. She will also face charges of failing to ensure a toddler is properly secured.

Should her children also be impounded? In all seriousness, what kind of mother is this? I know that we have all seen examples of bad parenting when we're out and about. Parental practices that we don't approve of, that kind of thing. Those we largely ignore and move along, because it's none of our business. Unless of course a child is in harm's way.

If this woman thinks nothing of going over 200 clicks/hour with loosely secured kids in the car what other neglect or suffering could these kids be going through? I'm only half kidding about taking the kids away. At the very least social services should show up at her door and put the fear of god into her. This is child abuse. Somehow those poor kid survived this, but what about next time? We have to make sure, one way or another, that there isn't a next time. LEAVE COMMENTS.

I just googled "high speed crashes" and viewed some frightening pictures of demolished cars. I know my car is governed at 170 K because of the tire rating. Few tires are rated above 210 K, but being aware of safety belongs in the realm of practical driving. Aggressive driving and the attitude responsible for it threatens the safety of all of us on the public roads. A little courtesy and thoughtfulness would go a long way, as we should behave in any public space. It would not be difficult for a vehicle traveling at that speed to jump the median if the driver lost control.
