Here’s an interesting story if you or your kids insist on eating processed dairy foods: a study published in Nature found that concentrated saturated milk fats commonly found in processed foods causes a boom in bad gut bacteria, leading to an imbalance between the bacteria and the immune system – and triggering higher risk of inflammatory bowel diseases. The study might explain why colitis and other immune-related conditions have become more prevalent in Western societies in the last 50 years.
Researchers found that the uncommon gut microbe, called Bilofila wadsworthia, blossomed in the presence of milk fat. Previous studies have shown high levels of this bacteria in patients with appendicitis and other intestinal inflammatory disorders.
If you have an inflammatory bowel disease, try giving up your milk products.
