The Games people play
Someone please tell the commentators on the Olympics to stop jinxing our athletes....AND to stop embarassing them on TV after they don't win gold. I know its tough to keep people interested and excited sometimes...but I've been ready to throw my brown bottles at the flatscreen I don't know how many times during the last few days as announcers (obviously under orders to hype...hype and then hype some more) have built up expectations to wuthering heights only to come crashing down when Canadian athlets finish a thourouly dissappointing second or worse!!!.
There are so big differences between these games and the winter ones in Vancouver. One…we don’t have a big star or event to concentrate on. No hockey gold to shoot for for instance.
The coverage though has been a little grating. I wish that announcers would stop attempting to come up with more and more superlatives to describe the athletes. When swimmers enter the water they are not “human flesh and bone in conjunctions with indefaticable spirit” as I heard one commentator intone. They are swimming…it’s a race.
Two…I’m already tired of that little animated banker wit the bowler hat who is on every commercial break…and I’m going to poke out my ear drums if I have to hear the games “I Believe’ theme music that palys in and out of every break.
Somewhere there has to be a happy medium between the way we used to do it when Canadians were just happy to be there and finishing in the top 50 was headlinr news and the way we do it now. Athletes who finish in the top 10 in the world shouldn't be made to feel as if they've failed...or let us down...Thats very unCanadian of us.
