Labour Day

We argue a lot in this business.  We have differing views on politics, religion, sex and heaven knows what else.  The right doesn’t like the left…the left thinks the right is dangerous.  People trash the government…they burn the flag….they worry that immigration is taking jobs…they are concerned that the right is becoming intolerant.  The airwaves crackle daily with the sound dissatisfaction and rage.  To some its disturbing but to me it’s the sound of a country that allows us to disagree…loudly. Look around the world and you will find that our freedom to come and go…and to spit into the wind if we so choose is not something that is shared in many places.  In fact, if you count up all of us on earth and a majority of us can’t speak out, can’t travel without permission, can’t work in any field we choose.  While I cherish our ability to dissent I fear that the reason we have the ability is being lost on many.  Labour Day should be a time to thank those who helped shape the lives we have.  Shorter work weeks, work protections…labour unions contributed mightily to the standard of living we enjoy.  Over the years some unions have pushed their reasons for existence and have taken things too far but lets not forget the reason for this weekend while we're bbqing with a beer...
