Reason #261 not to live in Calgary

Finding a place to put your car everyday is now 241 dollars and 72 cents per month -- an increase of more than six-dollars over last year. We love our cars but we do pay for that love.

Calgary is Canada's most expensive city to park, 456 dollars and 75 cents. Only New York City has higher rates.

It is the very bane of our very existence...the simple act of finding a place to put your car.  We all must drive...we must go places...but when we get there we must find somewhere to leave the vehicle...and it’s going to eventually kill us all I have so many issues with parking I don’t know where to start.   I still don't understand how a public health system can expect people in crisis...to fish through the car for change...only to find your short...come out after hours of a stressful time in your life only to find you have a ticket for 25 bucks..This can cause even more stress than the ailment that brought you to the hospital in the first place.
It’s not just hospitals...parking is a pain every part of our lives...

Why do people love malls?  It’s not the indoor atmosphere...the wonderful music that plays from the cheap speakers in the ceiling…Its not the New York Fries and Orange Julius at the food court ...It’s the free parking.  We don't seem to care how far we have to walk as long as we don't have to pay.  Why do some downtowns thrive and some struggle...free parking.

When you think about it ...what is the biggest headache for city dwellers...the cost of parking...?  What doubles the cost of doing anything...parking...

There is a reason that some businesses finish their Radio commercials with the term free parking...it’s a big selling point...
Touring New York some years ago a tour operator pointed to a small grocery store in Manhattan and told us that it was the only store on the island to offer free parking for its customers.... It was jammed but everyone entering the lot had to pass armed guards making sure no one abused it.  Yes...it is a sign of the apocalypse...a little empty peice of earth...
