Brock study highlights Niagara's childcare issues

A new study released by Brock University says families in Niagara are having to make a difficult choice between working or having a family.

A policy brief by Brock University's Niagara Community Observatory shows the financial difficulties that can come with having kids and trying to find affordable day care in the region.

In the report author Carol Phillips shows that a mother in Niagara would have to earn nearly 38 thousand dollars to feel it was affordable to return to work after having just one child. For a mom with a two year old and three year old child, the day care costs would top 18 thousand dollars per year.

In Niagara, the regional governement offered more than 4 thousand subsidized day care spots in 2012 for people with lower incomes.

Phillips says the current child care system has the capacity for about 17 percent of Niagara's children.
