Police providing a few more details surrounding an accident late last night in Welland that has prompted an investigation by the province's Special Investigations Unit.

The NRP's Sgt. Derek Watson says just before 10 last night, an officer initiated a traffic stop on Thorold Road in Welland.

The SUV stopped, then sped away at a high rate of speed, striking a cyclist at the corner of Thorold Road and First Avenue, continued on and struck a gas pump and a pole at the Husky gas station.

The driver fled on foot and was arrested a short time later.

The cyclist was airlifted to  hospital, no word on the cyclists condition at this time.

The driver, 38 year old Michael Brazeau of Welland,  is facing nine charges including impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and flight from police.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is called in when injuries or a death result from police interaction with the public.
