More & more Canadians are packing overnight bags for roadtrips to the US.
Statistics Canada says the number of overnight cross-border trips to the states jumped 7.5% in June to the highest level since 1972.
Most of those overnight trips were by car.
It isn't clear if new cross-border shopping rules that kicked in June 1st had anything to do with the spike.
Now, after a 24-hour stay, you can bring back $200 worth of stuff duty-free. If you stay at least 48 hours, the maximum is $800. There still aren't any exemptions for same-day trips.
Some local businesses & economists predicted the change would hurt Niagara retailers.
The number of trips to Canada grew a little in June, up 0.5%.
