EXCLUSIVE: Testimonial from inside Pelham's triple fatal crash

7/13/2012

Friday the 13th is a lucky number for 610 CKTB employee, Sam Turner. Sam was one of those injured in a fiery crash in Pelham overnight which claimed the lives of 3 people.

Resting at home, Sam says she and her husband, along with the other two in the SUV with her, are all lucky to be alive. Not only is it Friday the 13th, the four were all sitting in row 13 on the plane home.  As well, Youngblut volunteer firefighter number is 13.

The four were returning home from Hamilton airport following a trip to Calgary.  They were taking the backroads home to avoid any QEW traffic.

After passing through the intersection of Regional Road 24 and Highway 20, they spotted a car coming around the curve. She says the car never tried to negotiate the curve and came straight at them.

The driver of the car, a volunteer firefighter for the town of Pelham -- Jim Youngblut -- tried to move off the road but couldn't avoid the collision, turning the SUV completely around and throwing it in to the ditch. Sam describes the impact as "unbelievable."

The other car burst in to flames, killing three people.  One person was thrown from the car, who Sam's husband pulled from the road.

Youngblut was airlifted to Hamilton hospital with a broken ankle and will likely need surgery to repair a broken elbow.  The others, including Sam, were taken to Welland hospital.  They've all been treated and released.

I moved to Welland in 2011, and I am amazed at how fast people drive around here. On rural roads where the speed limit is 50km, everyone drives at least 20 km, and if you are doing the speed limit they will tailgate, and if that doesn't work they fly past you on solid lines ! I grew up thinking that you could only pass on broken line roads, I guess the rules have changed, or people just don't care to obey the rules of the road? I find it frustrating! If you have to be somewhere just leave early enough so you don't have to speed, otherwise your speeding will get you your death ticket sooner!! Also for those who still text/talk a blue tooth is only $20.00,worth saving a life???? Maggi

@MaggiM I meant to say they drive 20k over the speed limit, on all the roads here, sometimes more!!!!

@MaggiM I have lived in Welland almost all my life and i have seen more people in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, etc drive faster then in Welland. So i'm not exactly sure why you are so amazed, Welland isn't the only city with speeders. However, people are just in a hurry to get to no where. I'll be going 110 on the highway and i'll have pple come up on my arse then zoom right by me as if i was going 50. Or i'll have pple speed by and pass me just to reach a red light. I guess getting to where ever they have to be quicker is more important then getting there alive or allowing others to get to their destination alive and in one piece.

Sam, so sorry to hear of this horrific experience. Thanks to God that the 4 of you survived. Hopefully Jim will have a speedy recovery. Pat Y (1990)
