Still have an old red & white Ontario health card tucked into your wallet?
It may not be any good to you. It may have been cancelled.
The government says they send 3 notices to people with the old cards, with instructions to get a new photo health card with a 5-year expiry date. If the card holder does nothing & doesn't use their red & white card for 7 years, the government void's it.
A spokesperson for Ontario's Health Minister says "This is done to protect the integrity of our system".
People who have, unbeknownst to them have their cards cancelled, may have to pay out of pocket to see a doctor. OHIP will consider paying back those expenses.
More than 3.5-million Ontarians still have the old red & white health card.
