Liberal Niagara Falls MPP protests with teachers

8/28/2012

Liberal Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor has broken party ranks & joined teachers protesting on the front lawn of Queen's Park.

Teachers are at the legislature speaking against a bill that would force a 2-year contract on them.  It would freeze wages, cut benefits & block strikes & lockouts.

Tuesday afternoon, Craitor stood among a crows of union members with a large, orange rectangular button on his suit jacket that read "Respect Teachers, Respect Collective Bargaining".

Craitor says he was asked by a constituent to wear the button

Speaking with 610 CKTB's Tim Denis before the protest, Craitor admitted to having "difficulty" with government bill that he says "challenges" his principles & values.

Craitor said he understands the government has introduced the legislation to protect students & the school year ahead, but he believes in collective agreements & "people's rights".

Asked about breaking ranks with his party, Craitor replied "Give me a break!  You stand up for what you believe in in principle.  Sometimes I'll agree with the government, sometimes I don't.  I represent people of Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake & Fort Erie."

Craitor wouldn't reveal if he'd vote in support of the government bill, saying "I'll know when the time comes, it's not an easy decision".

Tim Hudak...>Why don’t we just cut to the chase? Will you support the PC call for an across-the-board wage freeze for all of us—teachers, doctors, firefighters, MPPs—that will save us $2 billion a year? Dalton Mcquinty ....>No, we won’t do that, because it won’t work; it’s as simple as that. It’s NOT constitutional. (QUEENS PARK TRANSCRIPT TODAY)
