CAW angry over ''unprecedented demands'' from the big three automakers

9/11/2012

The CAW has gone public with what it calls ''unprecedented demands'' from the big three auto makers.

The union says the companies want to create a two-tiered workforce, eliminate cost of living adjustments, cut benefits for prescription drugs and dramatic changes to pensions.

The CAW also says it's refusing to commit to new investments at Canadian operations.

Wayne Gates, President of Local 199, tells CKTB News the key to breaking the deadlock in these ongoing negotiations is the big three have to stop with all the concessions.

"We believe the company has to ... sit down with us, come to the bargaining table with realistic goals from their side," says Gates. "We believe our goals are certainly realistic. We want to get investments in our plants."

The news comes ahead of next Monday's strike deadline.
