Niagara region is getting geared up for another season of West Nile virus surveillance.

Director of Environmental Health, Bjorn Christiansen tells CKTB news residents are encouraged to call to report any dead birds around their homes. He says the region will come and pick them up for you. It's also time, Christansen says, to protect your family from the West Nile Virus. He says it's important to empty out standing water around your property, make sure you're wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent containing DEET.

While most people never show signs they've contracted West Nile Virus, in some cases symptoms can be severe.
