Hailing from a long line of fishmongers, Tom got his start on radio doing the daily spot price for the catch of the day. Noting both his proficiency and personality in conveying the market for Lake Erie perch, London's CJBK quickly snapped up this young man and placed him in the football booth with local sports legend Pete James. With his various impressions and impersonations of people that are far more interesting than himself, he was quickly promoted to chief button pusher on the afternoon drive show. First among his additions to the program were the poorly received "Sewing Tips", and the ill-fated "Cow Tipping."
His awards include the Long John Silver's tri-county media personality for three consecutive years and the highly coveted Red Lobster's big mouth bass trophy for outstanding volume level and clarity. In 1997, Archie's Fish & Chips retired their annual Siren's Song when they felt Tom's work with his daily "Captain's Calls", which gave store managers the seafood prices in all the large North American markets, could never be topped.

In an effort to better get their message out, the Conservative Party of Canada has come up with a strategy for party members, including the use of talk radio shows. While their talking points that they want to emphasize are interesting, I think they have provided a great primer on how every caller can sound better, from the veteran to the first-timer.
When you make your call:
- Think about what you want to say ahead of time.
- You may have trouble getting through your first try, so if the line is busy - don’t give up!.
- Once you get through, you will probably speak to a producer. The producer will ask you a few basic questions. Some of the questions they generally ask is: What is your name? Where are you from? What did you want to talk about today?
- Once you’re on the air, make sure to turn down your radio – you’ll have a hard time understanding the host with the radio on in the background because of the time delay feature used by most stations.
- Hosts prefer you to speak clearly and slower than usual.
- Be concise -- you will have only a short amount of time to make your point.
- Stay conversational – do your best to have a conversation with the talk show host instead of just reading your notes on the radio.
- Remember: some hosts like to be provocative and interrupt. Think about what the host may say about your opinion and be ready with an answer.
- Enjoy. You’re talking on the radio!
