Here's what happened to close Season 5.
An overnight and morning winter storm briefly threatened our Night of Champions 5, but by day's end the sun was out and so were the champions. It was our best turn out ever at Boston Pizza, Pen Centre. Even Tom McConnell showed up, hoping his suggestion for the name of NOC5, No Country and Western For Old Men, would be used. But alas, we stayed with Cinco de Pie-O, so Tom stayed to help judge and to have a good time.
As always contestants dined on delicious Boston Pizza appetizers and "loosened up" with an array of beverages while awaiting the opening round. The "Top 40" written round began about 7:30, with co-host/judge Kevin Jack spinning the clues for the evening. 40 short clues were played and entrants frantically wrote down their guesses. As dinner was served, judges calculated the top 16 scores from the written test. High score was 34, low score 1 (that's correct, ONE!). Randomly, the 16 top scorers were drawn to face live "heads up" Name That Tune competition with song categories like "Potpourri", "Girls and Boy's Names", (in that round we had a contestant named Mandy and a song named Mandy, but they didn't synch up) "Food and Beverage", and the final round of just really hard songs.
A few highlights. The top scorer from the written Top 40, was knocked out in the first live round. A previous NOC champion got stumped early on the song An Englishman In New York. As we pared down to 8, to 4 and to the final 2, contestants won prizes like "Forever Legends Box CD sets", Poker Sets, iPods and concert tickets, and of course the grand prize.
Grand Prize - the Name That Tune Champion won a trip for two to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in Cleveland including 2 nights accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Cleveland at the Arcade, Dinner for two and 2 tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.
The final 2 heads-up match featured two of the best most consistent players all night. Steven Woychewko vs. Martha Lockwood. Martha drew first, How's It Going To Be by 3rd Eye Blind. She missed and Steven couldn't steal. Steven drew the song '65 Love Affair by Paul Davis and guessed "Sixty-Nine" to the amusement of the crowd. Martha stole with a correct guess and a 1-0 lead. Martha drew Opus' Live is Life, missed her guess for the win, but again, Steven couldn't steal to tie it up. Steven pulled Rumors by the Timex Social Club, and guessed "How Do Rumors Get Started". Of course under the "too much information" rule it was deemed incorrect and Martha correctly answered, simply "Rumors" for the win. Great players all around, a great night.
Thanks to all of our sponsor friends who donated prizes for the evening, Boston Pizza for hosting us, Patrick's D.J.-Sound & Lighting and my personal thanks to you for supporting Name That Tune. - Larry Fedoruk
