A St.Catharines senior is recovering following a violent raccoon attack.
The unusual attack happened last Sunday morning when Wilma Hagt was leaving her home on Carlton Street.
The 81 year old tells CKTB a raccoon came from out of nowhere and attacked her.
She ran to her home, but the raccoon followed her inside.
She says the racoon kept jumping onto her and biting her legs and arms.
She says blood was everywhere.
Hagt says she was able to close her entrance door and trap the raccoon inside the two doors.
She called 911 and emergency officials arrived on the scene and entered the home through the side door.
Hagt's husband, who uses hearing aids was in the shower at the time of the attack.
She says he came down the stairs and was in shock by all of the emergency officials and the scene of the blood.
Her husband thought Wilma had been attacked by a person.
Wilma is now recovering at home with a cast on her left hand and bandages on her legs.
She is unable to walk without crutches.
The raccoon was tested for rabies but the results were negative.
Hagt says the animal was nuts, and in all her 81 years she has never seen a raccoon in the daytime.
She says all residents should be careful if they spot one.
Hagt says there are a few theories on why the attack happened including that the animal had distemper, and also that recent flooding has forced animals from their habitats.
