Niagara EMS helped two of their own bring a new life into the world.
Local paramedics Taylor and Mark Haynes were hoping to make it to the St. Catharines hospital yesterday morning when Taylor went into labour, but slow traffic along Lakeshore Road forced them to make alternate plans.
Instead, Mark drove to the Lindwell Road EMS base with hopes of getting an ambulance, but the baby simply couldn't wait.
"So Mark and Taylor when they arrived at Lindwell Station, they found that there was no ambulance there because both paramedic crews were out on calls." Niagara EMS's Acting Superintendent of Public Relations and Affairs Bryce Brunarski tells CKTB News. "Thankfully one of our dispatchers, Ashley Barker, was able to send a crew within 4 minutes."
Brunarski says fellow paramedics helped Mark deliver his son right there at the base.
"Apparently he was pretty calm, cool, and collected the whole time. He had just come off of a night shift, so he didn't even have time to sleep."
Brunarski says mom and baby Weston are doing great.
"He was a whopping 10 pounds 5 ounces, but Taylor said he was ready to come out. He was 6 days overdue and he was ready to come into this world. Our operations superintendent Terry Flynn said as soon as he came into this world his eyes were wide open."
Niagara EMS officials sent out their congratulations, saying this is the first time they have delivered a baby at one of the EMS bases.
