At least one Niagara Falls city councillor is welcoming a move included in the provincial budget, allowing municipalities to charge a hotel room tax.
Wayne Campbell calling it a fantastic idea, adding money raised from the tax can be used to promote tourism in his city instead of taking it out of the city's budget.
Campbell says at this point they have not received any details of the plan, but he assumes the tax will replace the current Destination Marketing Fee.
Under that plan, tourist operators in the city have been adding an average three percent fee on bills which they are expected to use to promote their own properties
However the fee has been the subject of controversy because the operators do not have to report where or how the money is spent.
Campbell adds the hotel room tax will ensure there is a coordinated effort to promote the tourism industry.
