According to senior government sources, teachers in both elementary and secondary school would be required to pass the yearly test if they want to continue teaching, even if they do not teach math in the classroom.
The Ontario PC government has repeatedly promised to find a way to improve falling math scores in the province.
According to the latest EQAO Statistics for 2017 - 2018, elementary school students in the District School Board of Niagara were above the provincial average for math scores.
While Grade 3 students in the Niagara Catholic District School Board met the average, grade 6 students did lag slightly behind the provincial average of 49% with a success rate of 47%.
When it comes to grade 9 math, Niagara students in Applied and Academic streams at both boards met or surpassed the provincial average.
