The Ford Government is forging ahead with plans to review regional governments in Ontario and they're not ruling some possible amalgamations.
However, at least one political science expert thinks amalgamation would be a bad idea for Niagara.
Western University's Andrew Sancton who is currently conducting a governance review for the Niagara Region says this area is peculiar in terms of how many municipalities it incorporates.
Sancton says "it would be a huge mistake to put this all together and it would create many more problems than it would solve."
He notes that when the Harris government amalgamated other municipalities like Ottawa, Hamilton and Toronto, in terms of cost, the amalgamations did not save any money and the moves likely increased costs.
The province has appointed two advisors who will make recommendations on how to cut costs and improve access to municipal services.
Other regions under this review are Halton, York, Durham, Waterloo, Peel, Muskoka District, Oxford County, the County of Simcoe and their lower-tier municipalities.
