The city of Fernie, B-C, has declared a week-long state of emergency after three people were killed in an apparent ammonia leak at the local arena.
The city says several homes and businesses in the area, as well as a retirement home, have been evacuated.
WorkSafeB-C says the leak happened shortly before noon yesterday, and three workers were exposed.
Ammonia is commonly used in refrigeration systems, including those found in ice rinks.
