An immigrant-hating white nationalist armed with at least two assault rifles and a shotgun is the suspect in the deaths of at least 49 worshippers attending Friday prayers at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
He wore a helmet camera and livestreamed the massacre on social media.
He also posted a 74-page manifesto on social media identifying himself as a 28-year-old Australian who was out to avenge attacks in Europe perpetrated by Muslims.
The gunman acted alone and says he chose New Zealand to show that even the most remote parts of the world were not free of ``mass immigration.''
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada condemns the attacks and will continue to work with its close partner and friend to take action against violent extremism.
Trudeau is urging Canadians to confront Islamophobia and work to create a world in which all people, regardless of their faith, can feel safe and secure.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said it was very disturbing that the gunman livestreamed 17 minutes of the massacre on social media.
He says Canada will keep pushing social media companies to work to keep this material off the internet.
