Fire chiefs in Welland and Port Colborne are advising people to stay off the ice in places like the Welland Canal, Lake Erie and even streams and rivers.
They say it's not a good idea to walk on bodies of water that are thawing now that we are seeing some milder weather.
Just last month, a woman attempting to rescue a dog broke through the ice on the canal, but managed to get out.
The dog was rescued by Welland firefighters.
Welland Fire Chief Tom Cartwright tells the Tribune that people need to realize how dangerous it is.
He says "there are always people who want to tempt fate."
