Police officials say the death toll now sits at 49 people after a pair of shooting in mosques full of worshippers.
In a post on Twitter Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern states, "What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us."
Another 20 people were injured in the attacks, while four people are now in custody.
One man is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow on murder charges.
Police also found two improvised explosive devices inside a car.
Officials say one of the people who claims to be behind the attacks left behind a lengthy anti-immigrant manifesto.
People in Christchurch, one of the largest cities in New Zealand, are being told to stay inside and avoid mosques anywhere in the country.
