Beamsville 4Paw Rescue responding after launching a petition asking that the LCHS be removed from investigating any further animal cruelty cases in Niagara.
The LCHS, an agent of the OSPCA, said it was not laying any charges after more than 100 live cats and about 150 dead felines were found on a Merrit Road property last month.
Kaitlynn Hodgeson of the Beamsville 4Paw Rescue joined CKTB's Lee Sterry and says they were asked to go to the Merrit Road site on July 19th, and since then they have been cleaning up the property.
The property on Merritt Road became known as a cat drop off site, because the tenant took in unwanted felines.
After the tenant left, the cats were left roaming the property.
Hodgeson says the owner of the property hadn't seen it in years, and had no idea it was run down.
The OPSCA say they've been investigating the property since December.
In a conversation with CKTB, LCHS Executive Director Kevin Strooband explains they could not bring any charges because of lack of evidence, and when the rescue groups went on the property and took animals that may have been distressed or deceased they broke the chain of evidence the LCHS has to follow.
Hodgeson says they reached out to the OSPCA before visiting the site.
She says they had no luck, and decided to take action when they saw the animals suffering.
Hodgeson says she's never seen any of the OSPCA reports on the property, but would love to offer them her reports and the evidence she has.
She says the petition was started when they heard the case was closed.
The LCHS has since said that the case is not closed and they are looking for information that would provide evidence for a charge.
Strooband says the whole thing started when people started dumping their unwanted felines on the property.
He urges pet owners to go to a humane society or contact a rescue if they no can no longer care for their animals.
