A report out this morning finds one in every 18 patients admitted to a Canadian hospital in 2014-15 suffered some kind of harmful event that could have been prevented.
That's almost six per cent of the 2.5-million patients admitted each year to both large and small hospitals across the country, excluding Quebec.
The Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute say the events run the gamut from getting the wrong drug to developing an infection.
And the more complex a patient's health status, the higher the rate of harmful incidents.
