The $1 million donation to the Meridian Centre for the naming of IceDogs Way will not be fulfilled.
In an email to St. Catharines City Council and Senior Staff, Mayor Walter Sendzik confirming after numerous discussions with Bill and Denise Burke, the city was unable to come to an agreement.
Mayor Sendzik will be asking for an additional item to be added to the Council agenda for an in-camera discussion on Monday night to consider the next steps, up to and including the removal of the IceDogs way signage.
The owners of the Niagara IceDogs announced in November of last year, they were pulling the $1-million donation to Meridian Centre citing two frustrating years struggling to finalize the deal with the city.
At the time, The Burkes said the issue was that the naming was supposed to be in perpetuity but the city wanted it capped at 20 years.
Bill Burke adds, "We don't have the energy to comment any further, but we are disappointed that it's become news again, we moved on a year ago".
