A difficult day for Canadian soldiers in Bulgaria.
Canada's chief of the defence staff General Jonathan Vance says a Canadian soldier has been killed in a parachuting accident in Bulgaria.
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says Bombardier Patrick Labrie was a member of the Royal Canadian parachute squadron.
Labrie was taking part in “Swift Response 2019,” a United States-led joint multinational airborne field training exercise involving 5,600 troops from eight nations.
The exercise is taking place at various locations in Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania from June 11 to June 24.
The military said the accident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. ET in Cheshnegirovo, Bulgaria.
General Jonathan Vance, Canada's chief of the defence staff, is promising an investigation.
Vance delivered the news before a federal cabinet meeting in Ottawa.
Labrie is from the Canadian Armed Forces based in Petawawa, Ontario.
