The Deputy Chief of York Regional Police has been named as the next OPP Commissioner.
Thomas Carrique will take up the position as of April 8th.
This comes one week after Ron Taverner withdrew from consideration.
According to the York Regional Police, Carrique has worked in a variety of roles since joining the organization in 1990, including uniform patrol, criminal investigations, investigative service, traffic, marine, public order, and the administration and operations branches.
He has a certificate in terrorism studies from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and graduated from the National Policing Improvement Agency's International Commanders Program in the UK and the United States Department of Justice Drug Unit Commanders Academy.
He is the recipient of the Ontario Premier's Award of Excellence for Fighting Crime, the Governor General's Police Exemplary Service Medal and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal.
