A Hamilton representative will be the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority's new chair.
Members of the board voted for Brenda Johnson as the new chairperson this morning.
Although former chair Dave Bylsma was nominated, he was eliminated in the first round of voting.
Two groups of protesters, Extinction Rebellion Niagara and For Our Kids Niagara, attended the meeting to urge the board not to re-elect Byslma.
He is the national president of the Christian Heritage Party, a group that deems man made climate change 'a hoax.'
During his speech ahead of the vote, Bylsma said "I've held every member of this board, and every staff member with the highest respect. I do not deserve that. I am a good chair." It is not clear what he was referring to by 'that.'
In 2007 Johnson worked as the Project Manager for Environment Hamilton and is currently serving her third term as the councillor for Hamilton's Ward 11.
As she took her new seat as chair, she said, "I'm not interested in the past, folks. We dealt with the past. I'm more focused on today, and what we're going to do tomorrow. Let's get to work."
Bruce MacKenzie from Grimsby was voted in as vice chair. He is the Commissioner of the Niagara Escarpment Commission, Director of the Hamilton Naturalists Club, and coordinator of the Grimsby Wetlands.
