Three years ago, Brock University was posting a $20 million deficit, and its financial picture was in dire straights, but now the school is reporting it will start the new fiscal year with a balanced budget.
It's the first time in a decade Brock has managed to balance the books.
In a release, school officials note Brock is one of the area's biggest employers with two thirds of its expenses, more than $213 million going to wages and benefits.
The university also spends more than $23 million in Niagara purchasing goods and services from local businesses.
Adding to the financial pressure, Brock officials say the school receives the lowest provincial grant funding of any university in Ontario.
Brock's Vice President of Administration, Brian Hutchings, says the scenario is not without challenges, but he feels momentum is on the University’s side, given Brock’s emerging reputation.
