Something to keep in mind if you're still crossing the border to buy gas and pick up a few groceries, the counter-tariffs that Canada put in place after the Trump administration imposed new tariffs on steel and aluminium are now effective.
As of Sunday, shopping goods taken across the border back into Canada are now subject to a surtax, an additional tax on what is already being taxed, based on how long you've been in the U.S. and how much you've purchased.
The surtax will be applied to a variety of U.S. products such as coffee, toilet paper and many other grocery items, ball point pens, playing cards and nail polish.
