The city of Hamilton is asking anyone who may have come in contact with a cat in rural Glanbrook to come forward.
The city says it was notified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the cat, now deceased, tested positive for rabies.
Public Health is asking anyone who who may have lost, abandoned, fed, or came in contact with a male adult orange tabby cat in the area bounded by Rymal Road to the north, 5th Line to the south, Fletcher Road and Harrison Road to the east, and Pauline Johnson Road to the west between Sunday, January 22 and Monday, January 30, 2017 to contact their local health unit to determine whether or not they need to get a rabies post-exposure vaccine.
This is only the second case of domestic rabies in Hamilton in over 20 years.
Its believed both cases, involving cats, may be related to the resurgence of raccoon rabies in the area.
The CFIA is currently testing the cat to see if it in fact had been infected with the same strain of raccoon rabies currently circulating in wild animals in the city.
Results are expected next week.
