Welland officials are hoping to get an update on a funding request for the Forks Road Bridge soon.
A funding application has been submitted to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and is currently being reviewed by the provincial and federal governments.
City staff expects to hear back this fall.
A funding application was already turned down by the National Trade Corridors Fund, who did not believe the project met 'essential assessment criteria.'
In the meantime, city staff will be improving the condition of Canal Service Road, the route currently being used by first responders in the event of an emergency.
The Forks Road Bridge was closed in October of last year after engineers flagged safety concerns with the rapidly deteriorating structure.
The span was officially dismantled and removed in April.
In the meantime a citizens' group focused on the bridge, Welland Bridge 18 Committee, says they faced difficulties after three members of the committee resigned, but they are assuring the public they are still 'alive and well.'
