A St.Catharines vet at the centre of an animal abuse scandal has talked to CKTB News in an exclusive interview.
Doctor Mahavir Rekhi who owns and operates the Skyway Animal Hospital in St.Catharines says he has no plans on selling the Welland Ave. building.
When asked if he plans on working at the office again he said yes, saying he doesn't run away from things.
Looking frail and emotional Dr. Rekhi was at the office just before noon Thursday placing some items in his vehicle, which he parked directly in front the office.
Police were called to the animal hospital earlier today after reports of a protester.
When CKTB's Bonnie Heslop arrived on the scene, police were gone but Dr. Rekhi was inside the building.
He was very soft spoken and told CKTB tough times are ahead but he will be able to practice again in February.
When asked if he has a message for the people of St.Catharines he wouldn't comment.
Outrage erupted back in September when CTV Toronto aired video of Dr.Rekhi choking and hitting animals in his care at the Skyway Animal Hospital.
The College of Veterinarians of Ontario suspended Rekhi for 10 months on August 20th for professional misconduct.
His sentence could be reduced if he agreed to attend additional training.
Heslop asked Rekhi if he is taking part in that training and he gestured yes.
The doors of Skyway Animal Hospital have been closed since.
The building has been vandalized with eggs and feces.
A petition on Change.org asking the College of Veterinarians of Ontario to revoke Dr. Rekhi's licence has over 40 000 signatures.
St. Catharines Council has also passed a motion asking the CVO to strengthen penalties for veterinarians convicted of animal abuse.
A protest outside of the Skyway Animal Hospital in October drew hundred of protestors, angry with the sentence given to Dr. Rekhi.
The OSPCA says there is an investigation open, but they are 'weeks away' from any resolution.
