The College of Veterinarians of Ontario is commenting as a controversial St.Catharines vet has returned to work following his suspension.
The Skyway Animal Hospital on Welland Ave. had been closed since the fall after owner Dr. Mahavir Rekhi was convicted of abusing animals in his care and had his licence suspended for professional misconduct.
His suspension, which lasted six months has been lifted and he reopened the clinic yesterday.
Dr. Rekhi was caught on video punching and strangling animals in his care.
CEO of the College of Veterinarians Jan Robinson tells CKTB's Larry Fedoruk that Dr.Rekhi has completed additonal training.
The training includes several days of education regarding animal restraint, and a program on low stress handling of animals.
He was also required to write a report on what he learned.
The College will monitor the animal hospital for two years.
Robinson says they cannot go back in time, the case was decided and it's final.
She says Dr.Rekhi's behaviour is not all what they consider acceptable, and their hope is that the direction of this case will make a significant difference in the practice of Dr.Rekhi.
Robinson says the CVO is interested in the OSPCA investigation, and if there is new information they will review it.
Inspector Kevin Strooband tells CKTB the OSPCA investigation is ongoing.
He says there are a number of people involved in the investigation and it is premature to say when it could be complete.
Protesters continue to make their voices heard today, with many saying he should never be allowed to legally treat animals again.
Several online petitions are calling for the CVO to revoke his licence.
