The Port Colborne Fire department will not be getting a new fire station for the rural areas.
City council had been looking at the potential for a new fire hall for some time, but decided against the idea due to a lack of volunteer firefighters.
Fire Chief Tom Cartwright believes the right decision was made at this time, but it's a decision that can be revisited if there is a need for it.
"We're not getting inundated with complaints about how long it takes us to get there and that usually motivates politicians to look at the potential issue."
Cartwright says the average wait time clocks in at 7 minutes inside the city and 12 minutes for the surrounding area.
Plans are in place for expansion in the future if it's needed according to Cartwright.
"In the interim what I've asked council to do is set up a major capital reserve to help fund any future requirements with regards to upgrading or fixing the current building or potentially a second station if it's needed or any major capital equipment purchases which are going to need to happen over the next 4 - 5 years, and they've done so."
