A St. Catharines city councillor wants to stop apartment buildings from charging visitor parking.
Karrie Porter brought forward a motion last night to have city staff look into ways that they can prohibit buildings from charging visitors to park.
It stems from concerns at 250 Lake Street where the new owner of the building has sent out a notice that they will be installing parking meters.
Porter says the practice would create barriers for people visiting family members and it would put more pressures on street parking, "This isn't a building that's facing huge parking pressures, there is lots of visitor parking, and I question why we would allow this to happen." She adds that Toronto has a by law in place that prevents this practice.
Councillor Bill Phillips says this kind of policy would create problems, "If one person starts it, it's just going to go through the city because it's a cash cow for these people."
City staff will report back in the next month.
