City officials in Welland have received reports of coyote sightings in the north end of the city.
They say while coyotes do not typically approach people, they will approach family pets and small animals if given the opportunity.
Officials are asking residents to keep dogs leashed while out walking and keeping cats indoors from dusk to dawn.
They say if you encounter a coyote you should keep your distance, and the animal will most likely avoid you.
Never turn your back or run from a wild animal, it's best to stand tall, wave your hands, and make lots of noise.
Coyote concerns and sightings are addressed by the Ministry of Natural Resources, which can be reached toll-free at 1-800-667-1940.
